The Henna Wars audiobook

On a cozy, breezy morning on my balcony, with the soft chirps of the birds as my only distraction, I pressed play on The Henna Wars audiobook. Adiba Jaigirdar’s storytelling, combined with Priya Ayyar’s soulful narration, felt like a gentle embrace, pulling me into the intricate worlds of Nishat and Flávia.

As a 30-year-old woman, the layers of emotions in the story brought back memories of my teenage years, the turmoil, the first love, and the quest for identity. I connected deeply with Nishat’s struggles of coming out in a traditional setting and standing up against cultural appropriation. Her love for henna, its significance, and the cultural nuances associated with it felt like a journey back to one’s roots.

The dynamics between Nishat and Flávia were beautifully nuanced. Their budding relationship, set against the backdrop of the business rivalry and cultural differences, painted a vivid picture of young love in a multicultural setting. With each chapter, I found myself silently cheering for them, hoping they’d find a balance between their personal feelings and the challenges thrown their way.

By the end of the audiobook, I was left with a flurry of emotions. Adiba Jaigirdar’s portrayal of love, identity, and cultural challenges felt real and relatable. And Priya Ayyar’s voice added a depth to it, making me feel each emotion, every high and low. It was a journey I was glad to have taken, leaving me reflective and touched.
